Frugalpac brews up cup success, securing ‘A’ grade for Global Standard for Packaging Materials

The makers of the Frugal Cup, the world’s first coffee cup made from 96% recycled paper, have secured the BRCGS Global Standard for Packaging Materials.

British sustainable packaging firm Frugalpac, who recently launched the Frugal Bottle made from 94% recycled paper, has been awarded an A grade for its Frugal Cup production in the BRCGS audit, which helps packaging organizations deliver products that help support the delivery of safe, hygienic food and drink.

Frugalpac’s Frugal Cup has a carbon footprint up to 60% lower than conventional cups when sent to landfill and is easier to recycle again. The Frugal Cup is manufactured in Wrexham with its manufacturing partner the Cup Folk and has just been shortlisted as a finalist in the 2020 Sustainability Awards.

BRCGS is one of the most highly regarded certification programs recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI). To get certification, the Frugal Cup factory in Wrexham underwent a third-party audit of everything from quality management and risk analysis to building standards.

BRCGS certification is an internationally recognized distinction awarded to companies in the food storage and distribution industries that meet BRC Standards of best practices for quality, hygiene, and product safety.

Getting certification will help Frugalpac in its global mission to create and supply recycled paper-based products with the lowest carbon footprint that are easily recycled and don’t need go to landfill.

Frugalpac Chief Executive Malcolm Waugh said: “We’re incredibly pleased that Frugalpac has secured the BRCGS Global Standard for Packaging Materials with flying colours.

“Since launching the Frugal Bottle, we’ve been inundated with enquiries from around the world, from brands, bottlers and retailers and seen increased interest and orders for our Frugal Cup.

“Attaining the BRCGS Global Standard is a huge endorsement for Frugalpac and a vital part of our plan to export and promote our sustainable packaging products around the world.

We are immensely proud of achieving a grade A for our first audit and this is again due to the hard work and fortitude of all the Frugalpac team”

The Global Standard for Packaging Materials was the first packaging standard in the world to be recognised by the GFSI benchmarking committee and, to date, 4,500 suppliers in over 80 countries have chosen to be certificated to this scheme.

The Standard provides a robust framework for all types of packaging manufacturers to assist them in the production of safe, authentic packaging materials and to better manage product quality to meet customers’ requirements, while maintaining legal compliance.

It also recognises the importance of positive attitudes, values and beliefs towards product safety and quality within the manufacturing environment.
